Students from Dumfries and Galloway College’s (DGC) College Academy were given a roadmap to future employment during a visit to local car dealership Grierson & Graham Honda.
The Automotive Skills (Skills for Work) Level 4 learners listened intently as staff from the dealership offered an insight into the industry job roles for each department.
The study course includes both theory and practical activities around preventative maintenance, being responsible for inspecting vehicles for defaults using prescribed methods and recording their findings.
Speaking with the staff, students gained a good understanding of what is expected from school leavers applying for jobs within the various departments.
The tour included following a job card from the Service Advisors through to the Service Manager and into the Workshop and Parts Department.
There was a staff Q&A session that helped students get a real understanding of the industry as they discovered customer service is a top priority for everyone at the family-run company, which has been serving the region for many years, while learning about another aspect of the business — the ever-evolving technology and always being at the forefront of innovation.
Student Dylan Wright said: “I really enjoyed the tour and finding out about what an Apprentice Technician does.”
Classmate Billie Chambers added: “Finding out there is a demand for Automotive Engineers helped me consider this as a possible career when I leave school.”
