Reflecting on the Success of the Net Zero Skills Centre at Dumfries and Galloway College

Since its launch, the Net Zero Skills Centre at Dumfries and Galloway College has delivered significant results for individuals, businesses, and the wider region. By equipping people with the knowledge and practical skills required to support Scotland’s net zero targets, the Centre has become a valuable resource in the transition towards a greener economy.

With both the UK and Scottish Governments committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and 2045 respectively, the demand for skilled professionals in sustainable industries is only set to increase. Reaching these ambitious targets will require substantial work across various sectors, including the retrofitting of existing properties and the installation of energy-efficient systems in new builds. This presents an exciting opportunity for businesses and tradespeople to expand their services, meet growing demand, and future-proof their operations.

A Period of Growth and Achievement

Over the last several months, the Net Zero Skills Centre has played a pivotal role in driving this skills development forward. Through 44 dedicated courses, the Centre has provided a wide range of training opportunities tailored to the needs of individuals and businesses seeking to adapt to sustainable practices. Courses have covered essential areas such as:

  • BPEC Unvented Hot Water
  • Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Co-ordination and Risk Management
  • City & Guilds 2921-34 Level 3 in the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations
  • Level 5 CMI Award in Leadership & Management

These courses have supported over 100 individuals through funded programmes and helped 68 businesses upskill their workforce to meet the growing demand for green technologies and sustainable practices.

To ensure these training opportunities align with industry needs, the College has actively engaged with a range of partners. Collaborations with organisations such as Morgan Sindall, hub South West Scotland, Dumfries & Galloway Chamber of Commerce, and the Energy Savings Trust have strengthened the Centre’s links to key sectors. This ensures the skills being taught are directly relevant to the changing demands of industry.

Supporting Business Growth Through Engagement

In addition to running training courses, Dumfries and Galloway College has been committed to fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing. By participating in key events such as the Net Zero Skills Summit, the SOSE Business Summit, and the DG Climate Hub Carbon Literacy Training Workshop, the College has actively contributed to wider discussions on sustainability and net zero goals.

Workshops such as the Sustainability Supply Chain Workshop and the Future Energy Workshop have given businesses the chance to explore emerging technologies, identify growth opportunities, and connect with like-minded professionals. Engaging with industry events has been crucial in helping the College shape its course offering to meet the real-life needs of local businesses and ensure that learners gain skills that are immediately applicable.

Responding to Changing Needs

As we reflect on the achievements of the past  few months, it’s clear that the landscape of green skills training continues to evolve. The initial course portfolio has changed significantly since the Centre’s launch, reflecting shifting priorities and emerging market demands. For instance, the SVQ in Insulation and Building Treatments — previously withdrawn — is now being reintroduced through a pilot programme in partnership with West Lothian College. This development reflects the growing need for skilled insulation professionals as energy efficiency measures become increasingly important.

While interest in some course areas has fluctuated, the College remains committed to adapting its offering to reflect industry trends and government policies. With net zero targets continuing to shape regulations and working practices, businesses will need to keep pace with new standards. As part of this commitment, the College continues to explore new funding streams to make training more accessible, which could further expand opportunities for individuals and businesses alike.

Opportunities for Growth in the Net Zero Sector

Although some recent updates on business confidence in the UK energy sector suggest some uncertainty, there are still major opportunities ahead. The scale of work required to improve energy efficiency across homes, businesses, and public buildings will create significant demand for skilled professionals. Retrofitting properties, upgrading heating systems, and installing electric vehicle charging points will all contribute to meeting net zero targets — opening up substantial business potential for those ready to invest in the right training.

Dumfries and Galloway College is committed to being at the forefront of this transition. By maintaining strong links with employers, industry bodies, and government agencies, the Net Zero Skills Centre will continue to provide the relevant, high-quality training that businesses need to succeed in a low-carbon future.

If your business is looking to build the skills needed to thrive in this evolving landscape, our team is here to help. Whether you’re exploring new opportunities or adapting your services to meet future demand, Dumfries and Galloway College can provide the training and support you need.
