Dumfries and Galloway College teams up with Let’s Get Sporty to launch employability programme

Dumfries and Galloway College has joined forces with Let’s Get Sporty to deliver a dynamic new employability course designed to prepare participants for success in the workplace.

Running until June, the programme combines the strengths of both organisations to offer a flexible, hands-on learning experience.

Students benefit from the guidance of experienced Sport and Fitness lecturers from Dumfries and Galloway College, alongside the dedicated team at Let’s Get Sporty, a local not-for-profit social enterprise who provide young people with training, mentoring and career opportunities through the delivery of sport and physical activity.

L to R: Louis Geddes from LGS, Graeme Kilpatrick from DGC, and Dayne Moore of LGS.

The course is tailored to equip participants with key employability skills, including CV writing, job and college application support and event organisation. At the same time, students will gain valuable real-world experience through practical sporting activities and workplace engagement ─ offering a unique blend of learning and doing.

What sets this initiative apart is its accessibility and flexibility; students can benefit from the programme even if they are only able to participate for a few weeks, ensuring that opportunities are available to as many people as possible.

It also highlights DGC’s commitment to delivering inclusive, community-driven learning experiences by helping individuals build confidence and develop transferable skills.

Douglas Dickson, Principal and CEO, Dumfries and Galloway College, said: “This partnership embodies our commitment to equipping learners with the tools they need to thrive. By merging sport and employability training, we’re fostering resilience, teamwork and initiative ─ qualities that employers value. Whether participants aim for jobs, further education or apprenticeships, this course opens doors.”

Dayne Moore, Community Manager, Let’s Get Sporty, said: “Sport isn’t just about physical activity ─ it’s a vehicle for building transferable skills. Collaborating with the college allows us to reach more people, helping them harness their potential in a supportive, energetic environment.”

The initiative underscores both organisations’ shared mission to reduce barriers to employment and education. With a focus on inclusivity, the course welcomes individuals of all backgrounds, particularly those seeking to re-enter the workforce or pivot their careers.

Key features of the programme include

  • Practical Work Experience: Opportunities to lead and manage sporting events;
  • Employability Workshops: Training in CV crafting, interview techniques and digital literacy;
  • Personalised Mentorship: Guidance from industry professionals and college advisors;
  • Flexible Participation: Short-term engagement options alongside longer-term pathways.
