Dumfries and Galloway College (DGC) Student Association is celebrating after winning the Campaigns Award 2023 at the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland ceremony.
The Association’s ‘Here For You’ campaign took top prize at the event in Edinburgh on Tuesday, March 28 as judges hailed the project for ‘supporting students through the cost-of-living crisis’.
It is the first honour the college’s student body has won at the NUS awards — and it was a special occasion for everyone as they took top spot ahead of Aberdeen University Students’ Association and Edinburgh University Students’ Association.
‘Here For You’ is one of DGC’s values and was used for the project to remind students that as a college and student body they are there to listen, care for and respect them and that there is always support available at college.
The project has taken on several key activities — including a student food bank, self-service facilities on offer at lunchtime, Christmas Gift Appeal and the ‘Here For You’ partnership event — which will also continue to impact students in future years.
Danielle Hughes, DGC Student Association President, said: “We are so pleased to see the work we have carried out being recognised nationally.
“It was already so rewarding to see the impact our activities have had on our students, but to have them recognised in this way is such a great achievement.”
College Principal Joanna Campbell said: “We are extremely proud that our Student Association has been acknowledged at the NUS awards.
“Everyone at DGC has witnessed how the ‘Here For You’ campaign has helped people cope during difficult times — and this accolade is thoroughly deserved.”
