DGC offers senior pupils a head start through College Academy

Dumfries and Galloway College is proud to continue its successful College Academy initiative, offering senior-phase school pupils across the region the opportunity to study college-level courses alongside their school timetable.

In collaboration with schools across Dumfries and Galloway, the College Academy provides students with the chance to explore a wide range of subject areas, gain valuable qualifications and experience a taste of college life while still at school.

College Academy courses cover a variety of subject areas, allowing students to explore potential career paths while developing valuable skills for their future and getting to experience college life at the same time.

Whether they are considering further education, university or entering the workforce, students benefit from an engaging and supportive learning environment that enhances their confidence, independence and academic profile.

Students who have been part of College Academy, and their parents, have shared many positive experiences.

Lynsey Alison, parent of College Academy student Joe Alison, said: “Attending college while still at school has set Joe up on a path for academic and personal success. Studying at college has enhanced Joe’s academic profile, making him a more competitive applicant for future courses while boosting his confidence, motivation, and readiness for the next step.

“Looking back, I wish Joe had enrolled earlier, as this opportunity has helped confirm his career interests and focus on the qualifications he needs.”

Riley True, Legal Studies NPA student, added: “College Academy has given me a realistic outlook on how studying at university or college in the future will be. I’m hoping to study law at university, and this has given me a crucial foundation.”

Many students who begin their journey in College Academy go on to study full-time at Dumfries and Galloway College.

Lori Grubb, HNC Childhood Practice student, said: “I was inspired to take a College Academy course because I wanted a different outlook from school. My favourite part was just being in college – I liked my class and my lecturers. Now I’ve moved on to a full-time Childhood Practice HNC course, and I love it!”

Fellow students Katrina Fisher and Amelia Kurowska also progressed from the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Young People into the HNC Childhood Practice course, highlighting the seamless transition and the benefits of early engagement with college education.

Katrina said: “My lecturers have been so helpful and supported me all the way. College Academy has given me good knowledge to take to university, and I feel like it’s really helping me get where I want to be. Staying on at college has been the best choice for me.”

Amelia added: “Being at College Academy has really enhanced my time management skills and my confidence has grown. I feel like I’ve got some great skills to take on to university now.”

The College Academy continues to provide students across the region with the chance to broaden their horizons, gain new experiences and take their first steps toward their future careers.

With a range of subject areas available, there is something for everyone, whether students are interested in business, law, engineering, social care or creative industries.

By blending school and college learning, Dumfries and Galloway College is ensuring that young people in the region are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their next steps.

Joanna Campbell, Principal and CEO, Dumfries and Galloway College, said: “Our College Academy programme is a fantastic opportunity for senior-phase pupils across the region. By blending school and college learning, we are helping young people gain valuable skills, explore career pathways and prepare for their next steps—whether that’s university, employment, or further study with us.

“We are proud to work in partnership with schools to offer this experience and encourage more students and parents to explore what College Academy has to offer.”
