Dumfries and Galloway College has held an online celebration to mark LGBT+ History Month. Students, staff, representatives of the Students Association, LGBT Youth, and D&G LGBT+ collaborated to host the event which was designed to mark the accomplishments of unsung LGBT+ heroes during the month-long celebration.
Attendees also learned about the series of events being held across the South of Scotland region by the partner organisations. LGBT+ History Month aims to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and this year’s celebrations follow the theme of “Body, Mind, Spirit”. On a local level, Dumfries and Galloway College has chosen to adopt the theme of celebrating unsung LGBT+ heroes, to further highlight the individuals from the community who have had such a major impact.
The Dumfries and Galloway College event was well attended, with several participants highlighting examples of their own unsung LGBT+ heroes, and also brought together visitors from Police Scotland, Dumfries High School, SRUC, the NHS, youth workers, and others from across the region. Dumfries and Galloway College Equality and Diversity Officer, Sue Livermore, Student Association President, Bronwyn Brown, and Vice President, Amy Farley, were also involved in leading the rewarding and positive session.
The college, under the leadership of Principal Joanna Campbell and her team, is committed to equality and diversity and wishes its many LGBT+ students and staff a rewarding, nourishing, and well-deserved LGBT+ History Month. As a college community, Dumfries and Galloway College is also dedicated to the welfare, happiness, and success of all its students and staff, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity.

LGBT+ people make such a huge contribution to our college and so it is entirely appropriate that we set aside time to appreciate them and their history.
