Art and Design HND @ SCQF Level 8

Introduction

This course provides students with the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of art and design disciplines, allowing them to discover for themselves where their artistic future lies. It also prepares students for Degree level courses.

The course has a central focus of building a strong portfolio. This will consist of a full range of creative subjects in order to encourage experimentation, knowledge, and skills.

Learners will develop an understanding of interdisciplinary connections between the various subject areas within Art and Design and develop a critical thinking capacity and reflective evaluation processes within the visual arts field. You will also be taught skills such as time management and professional studio practice.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of HNC Art & Design 
  • Current college students will require a positive progressing learner reference and core skills development 
  • Successful presentation of a portfolio of work .

Information and Interview Session Requirements

If you are progressing from our HNC you will not need to attend interview.  

For external applicants:   

Once we have received your application, where possible you will be asked to attend an interview. You must confirm your attendance. Your interview will last no more than 20mins and it is imperative you arrive on time, or you may be asked to reschedule. 

 

Please remember that you are required to bring a portfolio of work with you to your information and interview session. Your Portfolio could include drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D, collage, textiles, digital imagery etc. Anything that demonstrates your visual awareness and creative abilities could be included. A maximum of 15 pieces and a variety of work recommended. Please be prepared to discuss why and how you produced the creative work in your folio. 

Applicants who do not bring their portfolio will be asked to reschedule their appointment. 

You may be asked to complete a skills task as part of your interview.

Course Content

The areas covered will include Observational and Development Drawing, Life Drawing; Painting across a variety of Media, Ceramics and Printmaking and a self-directed project with an opportunity to specialise in chosen media and technologies. The course content is subject to change.  

All SQA HN awards conclude with a graded unit. This is your opportunity to shine and complete an independent project that is graded A, B or C pass.

Assessments

Assessments are practical or written.

Progression

Successful completion has provided many students with access to degree courses in art and design or specialist areas such as fine art, printmaking, and ceramics.  

Successful completion of the full HND Art & Design course will allow entry into the second or third year of a university degree course in art and design or specialist areas such as fine art, printmaking, and ceramics.

Career Prospects

Graduate opportunities exist through self-employment as art or craft practitioners, artist-in-residence, art workshops and art therapy. Relevant employment opportunities can be sought in the following areas: Practicing Artists/Designers; Applied Artists/Designers; Artists Materials Suppliers; Illustrators; Community Artists/Community Arts Organisers; Ceramicists; Artist Printmakers; Gallery Proprietors/Curators and Teaching.
