Introduction

Employers typically value candidates who can show an understanding of how to interact effectively with customers, clients, and colleagues. By studying this course, you will gain a thorough understanding of the key aspects of providing effective Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG). The knowledge and skills you will acquire include signposting, making referrals, record-keeping, maintaining confidentiality, and employing effective communication and listening techniques.

Learners will have access to online learning platform.

During your time with the Dumfries & Galloway College, support is always available whenever you need it. Each learner is paired with a dedicated personal tutor who will grade all assignments and provide comprehensive feedback for every submission.

Entry Requirements

There is no specific entry requirements, but learners ideally should have a minumum of National 4 English and maths or equivalent.

This course is aimed at those over the age of 16.

When applying for this course you will be asked to supply a copy of your ID, which can be either a passport, driving licence, birth certificate or national identity card.

You can only study one course at a time.

Course Content

Unit 1: Information, Advice, or Guidance in Practice
Explore the distinctions between information, advice, and guidance, and learn how to meet the diverse needs of different clients effectively. This unit covers the boundaries and responsibilities involved in offering information, advice, and guidance, including practices such as signposting, referrals, and record-keeping.

Unit 2: Developing Interaction Skills for Information, Advice, or Guidance
Learn how to engage with clients using appropriate questioning techniques, active listening, and non-verbal communication. Understand the impact of values, beliefs, and attitudes on interactions, while also recognising the importance of maintaining confidentiality and impartiality in these exchanges.

Unit 3: Signposting and Referral in Information, Advice, or Guidance
Understand the key differences between signposting and referrals and when each is appropriate. This unit also covers organisational procedures for referring or signposting clients and outlines best practices for these processes, including recording, monitoring, and evaluating the outcomes.

Unit 4: Information, Advice, or Guidance in Context
Gain insight into providing information, advice, or guidance in relation to your specific practice and client group. This unit explores how to assist clients in making informed choices, addresses discriminatory practices and behaviors affecting certain groups, and examines barriers to support and ways to overcome them.

Unit 5: Skills for Advice Providers
This unit focuses on the purpose and process of an advice interview, including the dynamics between the client and advisor, the stages of the interview, and ensuring confidentiality. Key areas include understanding social policy in advice work, negotiating on behalf of clients, and developing support and action plans.

Assessments

Learners will need to complete a series of tutor-marked assignments (typically one after each unit) as they move through the course. Each assignment will include a range of tasks and questions. These assignments are assessed by your tutor to track progress, and you will receive constructive feedback to support you in meeting the required standards for each unit.

There is no final exam, as the course is assessed through ongoing evaluation.
