Introduction
This course offers learners the chance to gain knowledge and understanding of infection prevention and control, including relevant legislation, policies, systems, and procedures. It also covers the importance of risk assessments, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the causes and spread of infections, cleaning protocols, effective waste management, and decontamination practices. The course will equip learners with the skills to pursue further qualifications in this or other related fields and prepare them for employment.

Course Content
- The Principles of Infection Prevention and Control
This unit provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of infection prevention and control, including the relevant legislation, policies, and procedures. Learners will explore the roles and responsibilities of both employees and employers in preventing and controlling infections, the importance of risk assessments, and the effective use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The unit covers the causes and transmission of infections, as well as best practices in cleaning, waste management, and decontamination. Learners will be prepared to progress in their studies or to enter roles where infection control is essential.
- Causes and Spread of Infection
In this unit, learners will develop an understanding of the different types of infections, including bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. It covers the conditions needed for microorganisms to grow, how infections spread, and factors that increase the risk of infection. Learners will also learn about the different ways infective agents can enter the body, the common sources of infection, and poor practices that contribute to transmission. This unit prepares learners to understand the fundamental aspects of infection, helping them manage and prevent its spread effectively.
- Cleaning, Decontamination, and Waste Management
This unit focuses on the importance of maintaining a clean environment to prevent the spread of infection. Learners will gain knowledge of cleaning schedules, the use of cleaning and disinfecting agents, and the process of decontamination. The unit emphasizes the role of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in decontamination, how to manage environmental risks, and the proper handling and disposal of waste. It also covers the legal responsibilities related to waste management and strategies to reduce the risk of sharps injuries. Learners will be equipped to support safe and hygienic practices in any setting where infection control is a priority.
Assessments
This course requires the completion and passing of three tutor marked online unit assessments. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.
