Introduction
This course gives you the opportunity to learn about the different sectors within the modern business world and is designed to give you a broad understanding of the functions of business and a clear understanding of the business environment.
This course is equivalent to the first year of degree study and we offer this course as a standalone HNC or as part of a BSc Business Degree in partnership with University of West of Scotland which is available on campus at Dumfries & Galloway College.
By studying this programme, you will develop suitable competencies and industry knowledge to enhance an administrative, commercial, or managerial career. You will develop other relevant skills that employers value such as customer handling skills, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, personal target setting, enterprise and effectively dealing with clients, managing your own performance and that of others.
The course also includes a Professional Development Award in Team Leadership and Management which meets the needs of individuals who wish to develop as managers or leaders within the industry.
The HNC course has recently been updated to be more relevant to industry needs and includes more digital and emerging technologies within the delivery.

Full Time: 2 – 2.5 days per week, independent study is required. The course is delivered via a hybrid model. (face to face and remote)
Entry Requirements
One Higher at Grade C or above AND three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above in relevant* subjects; OR
- NQ Business level 6; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience
* Relevant subjects include English, Administration, Business Management, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Studies or a Science subject.
- You require a knowledge of Microsoft packages
- Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.
Entry may be possible for mature students depending on their prior knowledge and experience.
If you are currently studying at the College, you will also require a positive Progressing Learner Reference.

Course Content
You will learn Economics and Marketing, Business Communication Skills as well as Business Accounting, Human Resource Management, Customer Care, Managing People and Organisations, starting up a Business, Research Skills and Business Fundamentals with Emerging Technologies, which is vital for the changing world of business.
Assessments
The year is divided into 3 teaching blocks, so assessment is spread evenly throughout the course. There are opportunities for re-assessment throughout the year.
Assessment methods may include individual and group projects, presentations, written assignments, and practical exercises,
There is an end of year graded exam.
Progression
Successful completion will allow direct entry into HND Business which is equivalent to second year Degree programme.
Career Prospects
The HNC award will prepare candidates for entry to a wide range of positions including Administration Officer; Administration Supervisor; Assistant Manager; Business Development Assistant; Customer Service Coordinator; Finance Assistant; Purchasing Officer; Planning Officer; Sales Coordinator; Team Leader or Trainee Manager.
The above positions are just some examples of a wider range of suitable posts.
The programme is also ideal for students who want to start their own business and require a broad grounding in business topics.
